DFS namespaces provide users with a logical way to access files without needing to know their physical location. Sitting in front of your physical file servers, a DFS namespace is a hierarchy of UNC paths that don't reference the actual file servers, but transparently redirect users to the nearest copy of the data via NTFS shares.

Psexec runs as system. Unless the system space on the local machine has rights to that share, it won't be found. I get around this by launching psexec, mapping a drive to what I want run using my user credentials, then running the command from the mapped drive.
These steps have worked to delete the orphaned namespace because of server failure or loss of DFSRoots directory (or migrating from one SAN to another and thinking that DFS replication will replicate your DFSRoots to a new volume on the new SAN… which by the way DFS replication doesn't replicate DFSRoots)

1) Using the default C:\DFSRoots folder - I had planned on keeping this since it really is only a table of contents and shouldn't be storing any information. I agree, if users could write stuff here, it should probably be moved, you wouldn't want them filling up your OS partition!
